| Newport St Georges | 2 |
| Sandown and Lake Under 12s | 3 |
It was a beautiful, sunny morning at Medina, with Bud Lloyd being the only player missing from the squad through illness. Sandown lined up in their purple away strip with a 4-4-2 formation, looking for the win that would see them overtake Newport in second place.
First Half
It was a slow start from the visitor's point of view, with Newport taking the early initiative and pressuring the Sandown defence. The deadlock was broken after around five minutes, a good move down Newport's right side saw a dangerous ball into the box finished well by the home team's striker, 1-0. This setback seemed to spark Sandown into life, as they began to dominate the possession and chances. The equaliser eventually came as Oscar Fitzgerald found space inside the box to hit a powerful effort that was too hot to handle for the Newport 'keeper, 1-1. As the game approached half time, it was Newport who once again took control of the game and they went in front once more just before half time, due to a defensive mix-up in the Sandown defence.
Half Time – Newport St Georges 2-1 Sandown and Lake
The Sandown team talk reminded the players about previous occasions that they had come from behind at half time to win the game. Olly Lines was introduced to add some pace and width to the attack.
Second Half
Newport appeared to sit back more and look to defend their slender lead as the second half began. The away side were winning more and more 50/50 balls and looking dangerous on the break. After around fifteen minutes of the half, substitute Olly Lines received the ball in his own half before making a superb run down the right-hand side, beating two Newport challenges and delivering a fantastic cross that was gratefully received by Lewis Askey, 2-2. It really was an amazing assist by Olly and this was acknowledged by the Sandown players who rushed to congratulate both him and Lewis Askey after the goal. Both sides looked to grab the winning goal as the game neared it's finish, and it was Lewis Askey for Sandown once again who scored it with a brave header. With six minutes to go, Newport pushed to get back in the game but Sandown stood firm and held on for a priceless win.
Final Score – Newport St Georges 2-3 Sandown and Lake
Man of the match was awarded to Lewis Askey. His unselfish play, fantastic ability and cool, composed attitude set a wonderful example for his team mates. His two goals were thoroughly deserved and he also played his part in defence when called upon.
This really was a great result and performance. The resiliance this side now shows when going behind is a joy to watch. It was a quality game of football and all of the boys played their part in it. There was strong defending, great midfield play and clinical finishing.
If I had said at the start of the season that we would 'do the double' over both Newport and Shanklin I would probably have been carted off to the nuthouse. This result gives us a great opportunity for a top 2 finish and who knows, maybe even more?
